Our animals are part of our Backfatters family. We believe that by treating animals with dignity and allowing them to express their natural behaviours in large green paddocks to do whatever they want . We produce outstanding pork and smoked goods.
Here at Backfatters we breed two types of heritage pigs - the Large Blacks and the Berkshire. We've chosen these rare breeds due to the flavour and to keep the breeds thriving in Australia. Both are excellent breeders and dual purpose pigs
These large beauties are currently on the critical list for endangered breeds. These lovely big docile pigs will only thrive in a free range system. We are currently the only people in Queensland who are farming Large Blacks for meat. By creating an interest in this fantastic pig we can encourage more people to breed them and keep their breed alive and well.
Our Large Blacks are excellent mothers who are very gentle with their babies and produce lots of milk and turn our lots of fat happy babies. Their meat is tender, sweet and downright delicious. Long live the Large Blacks.
These pigs are the oldest breed in the world. Berkshire pork is prized for its juiciness, tenderness and it's sweet nutty flavour. Like Wagyu beef these pigs are known for their marbling which keeps the meat sweet and succulent.
These beauties are well suited for Free Ranging as the love our wet season and are very hardy. Berkies make excellent mothers also and produce loads of milk and big fat happy piglets.
